Prosecutors say Dixon is no longer eligible for bond

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Prosecutors argue Dr. Thomas Michael Dixon is no longer eligible for bail on appeal in the murder-for-hire plot that killed Lubbock pathologist Dr. Joseph Sonnier in 2012.

In the response filed Tuesday, the motion filed by the state states, even though Dixon's attorney's filed a motion for a rehearing that is still pending, "a defendant sentenced to 10 or more years upon the conviction of a felony is not entitled bail pending appeal from that conviction".

Dixon's conviction and sentence were reversed by the Court of Criminal Appeals after the Seventh Court of Appeals had overturned the conviction.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin has sent other issues, not addressed in this ruling, back to the Seventh Court of Appeals in Amarillo for it to review.

In January 2019 Dixon was released on a $2 million bond.
