LUBBOCK, Texas -

Grand jurors have indicted a man for the shooting that killed a man early last month.

Gilbert Cardona III, 25, was indicted accused of murdering Joshua Gomez, 37, on January 3.

Police say Cardona attacked the victim near the front entrance to Hotel Ava off of the the South Loop and Indiana Ave.

Court records indicate Cardona confessed to the shooting, but said he did it in self-defense. Cardona told investigators he saw someone with a military-style rifle and heard someone shout "kill them both" in Spanish.

Cardona's warrant shows he thought Gomez had a pistol in his waistband when Cardona shot him.

Investigators report never finding a gun on the scene and witnesses told police Gomez didn't have a weapon for weeks leading up to his death.

If convicted, Cardona faces up to life in prison with the possibility for parole.
