Chance of rain and things turning colder
Second week in a row we've had a nice weekend with things turning colder with precipitation chances through mid week. For today - better chance for rain through early afternoon with a slim chance for freezing rain this morning. Another cold front keeps us colder Tuesday with a better chance for Wintry mix with freezing rain and snow likely in our area. Higher amounts of snow in our north and western counties with 3-6" possibles and where a Winter Weather Watch is in effect until 6PM Wednesday.
Police in Arlington say a teenager shot dead for standing up to a school bully
Investigators say the victim, 16-year-old Samuel Reynolds, was an Arlington High School sophomore. A few days ago, police say he intervened to help a teenager who was being assaulted and bullied by a 15-year-old. Police say the 15-year-old decided to confront Reynolds in the hallway of apartments where they both lived. Security cameras show the 15-year-old pulling a 40-caliber gun and shooting Reynolds. Investigators trying find out where the kid got the weapon. Early voting a week away and Super Tuesday totals could be late
More than 400 election workers in Lubbock are gearing up for a busy voting year. There's 36 polling locations in Lubbock. The Lubbock County elections office is currently fully staffed. Early voting begins February 18th. The primaries are "Super Tuesday" March 3rd. Super Tuesday delegate totals could come later than usual this year in Texas. That's because the secretary of state created a new reporting system that hasn't been finished yet. Raw vote totals will still be available on election night on the Secretary of State's website, but allocating delegates based on those totals will take some extra steps. The Secretary of State disputes claims that delegate allocations will be reported on election night, saying that those results have typically been approximate allocations based on data self-reported by the counties.
Deadline today to recount or re-canvas Iowa numbers
The Iowa democratic party says former mayor Pete Buttigieg is leading the Iowa caucuses, but democratic candidates are expected to call a re-canvas or recount before the 1 pm deadline this afternoon. Buttigieg will claim 14 delegates in Iowa, according to state democratic leaders after updated vote numbers. Senator Bernie Sanders is in second place with 12 delegates. However, the Sanders team says Iowa is still in play and they're set to fight the results. Buttigieg says he's moved past Iowa and is focusing on future contests. As for now, Senator Elizabeth Warren is set to get eight delegates, with six for former vice President Joe Biden.
Trump prepares $4.8 trillion budget plan
President Trump is preparing a the plan that rehashes previously rejected spending cuts while leaving social security and medicare benefits untouched. The president's fiscal 2021 budget plan, set to be released today, seeks to wrestle trillion-dollar+ deficits into balance after 15 years. It isn't likely to generate a serious Washington dialogue about what to do, if anything, this election year, about entrenched fiscal problems that have deficits surging despite a healthy economy.
21-year-old midshipman died during fitness test
The navy is releasing details about a midshipman who died during a fitness test over the weekend. The U.S. naval academy identified him as 21-year-old Duke Carrillo of Flower Mound, Texas. According to the navy, he collapsed during a one-and-a-half mile run. He was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center in Maryland where he died.
Two U.S. service members killed in an attack on a joint U.S.-Afghan operation in Eastern Afghanistan
The two soldiers identified as Sergeant 1st Class Javier Gutierrez of San Antonio and Sergeant 1st class Antonio Rodriguez of Las Cruces, New Mexico. The attack carried out with a machine gun after the special forces held a meeting with local leadership in the eastern part of the country. No group has yet claimed responsibility, but officials say they aren't ruling out the possibility of an attack by ISIS.
Coronavirus death toll surpasses 800
The coronavirus spreading and claiming more lives. Health officials in mainland China say the coronavirus killed 81 people Saturday. That brings the total death toll around the world to at least 811. The coronavirus deaths now surpassing the total number of people killed in China when SARS broke out in 2002 and 2003. More than $37,000 people are infected now with coronavirus worldwide. Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. U.S. health officials say there aren't many preemptive steps that can be taken to avoid infection but basic sanitary measures on a regular basis could be helpful. There is currently no vaccine to protect against the virus.
