Lubbock Christian University unveiled a new sculpture Saturday. Located outside the McDonald Moody Auditorium is a piece of art honoring Lubbock Christian's founding president, Dr. F.W. Mattox.
He was appointed as the first president in 1957. He was tasked with building a college in a cotton field west of Lubbock.
"Other people have picked up the torch and carried it forward and...caught the vision of a Christian education," said Patti Bryant, Mattox's daughter. "So many people have built this college. It's not something one man could, so it took a team and a spirit of cooperation. And through the years, it has prevailed."
Mattox served 18 years as president of Lubbock Christian College.
