LUBBOCK, Texas -

In just their first year, the Frenship Esports program is already turning heads in the gaming world.

Esports has taken storm at high schools across the state. Frenship competed in the Rocket League State Championship against Grapevine High School.

It's an evolving sport that has potential to grow into something more for these student-athletes.

"At the beginning of the year I think a lot of these kids thought 'oh yay, I get to play video games and it's a sport, and I get a jersey', but now they're realizing it's more than that. It's scholarship opportunities, it's career opportunities," Nicolas Copeland, Esports Coach, said. "Sometimes some of these guys can take the knowledge of their game, guys and girls -- girls compete too, and take it into the professional league and become a shoutcaster or become a manager for a team or a program."

Frenship hosted a watch party for students to cheer the trio on. The competition was also streamed live on Twitch.

While they weren't able to take home a win, the team will be back at it again next week with the start of their spring season.
