Texas Tech freshman Jahmi'us Ramsey has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season after scoring 26 points at No. 3 Kansas and 21 points in a win over No. 12 West Virginia last week.
A guard from Arlington, Ramsey is currently fourth in the Big 12 by averaging 15.9 points per game, second at 43.2 percent on 3-pointers and 12th with 1.4 steals per game. He went 5-for-8 on 3-pointers against WVU and Kansas last week and now has made five 3-pointers in four games this season. Against the Jayhawks, Ramsey was 3-for-4 on 3-pointers in the second half to help the Red Raiders fight their way back into the game after he scored 21 in the 89-81 win over West Virginia last Saturday where he finished the game 7-for-11 from the field and also with five rebounds.
Ramsey has scored in double figures in 13 of 17 games played, has six games of 20 or more points and established a freshman record for Tech by going for 26 at KU. He missed for games in the non-conference schedule after a left hamstring injury with 10 minutes remaining against Iowa, but has started 11 straight since his return. Ramsey scored a career-high 27 points against Long Island on Nov. 24 after hitting five 3-pointers for the first time this season after he went off for 25 points with three 3-pointers against Houston Baptist. He would also hit five 3-pointers in a 20-point performance against Baylor and was 4-for-4 from beyond the arc against CSU Bakersfield where he also finished with 20 points. Along with his scoring, Ramsey is averaging 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.7 assists per game in his first season for the Red Raiders. Ramsey was an All-Big 12 Preseason Honorable Mention selection and earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the first time on Nov. 25 after his 27-point performance against LIU. He has led Tech in scoring in nine of 17 games he's played in.
Ramsey and the Red Raiders return to action at 8 p.m. on Tuesday by hosting Oklahoma at the United Supermarkets Arena before traveling to play at Texas on Saturday in Austin.
Devon Dotson (Kansas) collected his third Big 12 men's basketball player of the week honor and fourth career award after he opened last week by scoring 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting in a road win at Oklahoma State. The sophomore guard posted his seventh 20-point effort of the season, fourth in Big 12 play, with 21 points in the home win against Texas Tech. He added six rebounds against TTU and finished the week averaging 16.0 points on 54.2 percent shooting.
