Wolffarth students experience medical field as doctors for a day

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Wolffarth Elementary fifth grade students got to be doctors for a day. They learned the ins and outs of the digestive and respiratory systems.

"When you eat, it's small then when it gets bigger and bigger then you can't eat anymore," fifth grade student Nevaeh Walker said.

Walker is one of the fifth grade students who participated, "My favorite part is how we got to see the dummies and how an ultrasound works. You can use it for a baby in your belly or your pulse," she said.

Jakobe Deleon is another student who sounded like a med student after the field trip.

"We have something in our cheekbones that produces saliva," Deleon explained. "You have chemicals that mix together so like when we eat our mouth think oh that's good and when we're full your body rejects it so you don't want to eat anymore."

Second-year medical student, Briget Hyde, was never exposed to the medical field when she was younger. She's now the President of the Student National Medical Association. The organization volunteers and mentors young students so they see potential for themselves.

"It's important to show these kids that there are people that look like you and come from places that you come from that are doing things that you may not have thought that you could do," Hyde explained.

Following the field trip, students like Jakobe and Nevaeh started to rethink what they may want to be when they grow up.

"I wanted to be something else, but I didn't know you could do so much as a doctor," Walker said.
