LUBBOCK -

Local and federal law enforcement agencies arrested two people in a national park in Arizona this week for aggravated kidnapping in Lubbock, accused of beating and binding the victim.

Ryan Lara, 19, said Dakota Valderas, 23, invited him to an apartment on 71st Street west of Quaker. He was there to get a phone.

Investigators say while waiting for the phone, Damian Villareal, 25, attacked Lara and bound him with duct tape. Other people joined in, beating the victim. Several hours later, police report they placed a pillow case over Lara's head, then Villareal drove him to another location.

Several hours later, while riding in a moving vehicle, and still blind folded and bound, Lara was able to break free and jump out of the moving vehicle, according to police.

A passer-by picked Lara up from the road. He was taken to his father's house then to the hospital.

With help from U.S. Marshals and Park Rangers, Villareal and Valderas were found and arrested in a national forest in Arizona Monday. They are each held on bonds of $200,000.

Villareal had an outstanding warrant from the aggravated robbery of Picante's restaurant in 2017. Victims told police three people ordered employees and patrons to get on the floor and demanded money and personal property.

And, in 2019, Villareal was charged with being a felon with a gun. Court records also show he has previous charges and convicted of evading arrest, providing false ID and possessing small amounts of marijuana. These charges spanned the past several years.

Police are still looking into the actions of other people involved.
