"It's a blessing. We work really hard, and we put a lot of hours into it and a lot of hard work and dedication every weekend. It means the world to us," Sarah Walker said.

"We were just winning contests, it's part of it. You go through ups and downs in competition barbecues, so we were just on," Matt Walker said.

What started as a hobby, became a passion for Matt and Sarah Walker.

They have been competing for 4 years now.

The Kansas City Barbecue Society has named them "2019 team of the year."

"Everything about our process is a team effort," Matt Walker said.

"It keeps us going from week to week. I don't really know where we would be without the barbecue competition," Sarah Walker said.

The 2 divide and conquer, showing off where their respective skills shine.

Matt runs the pit and Sarah manages the team.

"I get all of the rub and dubs and make sure our tubs are ready for each category, you know, help load up everything," Sarah Walker said. "If Matt needs me to give him an extra hand or anything, I'm there," Walker added.

The pair work a normal work-week at their day jobs, but on the weekends they are hitting the roads.

Spending nearly every weekend at another competition, around the country.

"From then it's game on. I cook hot and fast. We start the fire at 5 o'clock and 12 o'clock you're cooking chicken, 12:30 p.m. ribs, 1 p.m. pork, 1:30 p.m. brisket. It's fast and furious turn-ins. It's fun, it's a fun game," Matt Walker said.

They beat out more than 2600 other competitors from around the world and swept all 4 meat categories plus the Overall Grand Champion trophy.

They say it's more than what they bring to the table.

"The people out there are awesome. Some of the people we've met are just the best people on the planet. And they just love to go out and cook and have a weekend away. It's a pretty cool thing, it's a pretty cool community," Matt Walker said.

"You get break downs somewhere in Kansas, I'm sure we can pull out our phone and we'll have a buddy out in Kansas that will be out there to help us," Sarah Walker added.

They may be savoring their big win but they are also gearing for their first competition of 2020 at the Humble Rodeo next weekend.
