TTUHSC partners with downtown redevelopment, breaks ground on student housing

LUBBOCK, Texas -

2020 will be a monumental year for downtown Lubbock. Parts of the redevelopment are set to be finished this year, with new plans being added.

The Lubbock Downtown Development Corporation and the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday for a new grad student housing complex.

Chancellor Tedd Mitchell saw a need for student housing within the Health Sciences Center.

"We get over 6,000 applications every year for 180 positions in our School of Medicine. So these students if they get in then they worry about housing," he said. "So what'll happen is once they're admitted then you'll get a phone call saying 'hey, where does everybody live?'"

Housing will also be available for Tech grad students. Developer John Czapski said once the housing opens it could attract more businesses.

"I think once this project's up and running and students have an opportunity, the graduate students, have an opportunity to get down here, I think you're going to see a lot more retail and things of that nature," he said.

While there's continuous projects in the redevelopment process, Mayor Pope said it's a good feeling to see all the work starting to pay off.

"We've been working on this for a couple decades, and it's happening right now in front of our eyes. And so I think it's, I think it's unbelievably good news for our community," he said.

The project's expected to take about 18 months.
