LUBBOCK, Texas -

The memory of Judge-Elect David Nelson continues to grow a year and a half after his death. He was killed off FM41 in July of 2018.

"David was loved. I think this is just another showing by his friends and the community," David's widow Ainsley said.

She knows her late husband's memory lives on. The county stepped in and unveiled the David Nelson Memorial Highway off FM41, where he was struck by a driver during a morning bike ride.

While Ainsley said there's no emotion harder than July 18th, 2018, she knows the representation of the sign will be powerful.

"It is a wonderful testament and representative of friendship. That's how he was to everyone he met. He wanted to be your friend," she said.

Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish said Nelson's legacy is one of service.

"David Nelson loved Lubbock. It was evident in everything that he did," Parrish said. "The sign will give them the opportunity to look him up and fall in love with the man that we fell in love with while he was here."

Ainsley hopes the sign will help with road awareness to lessen crashes in the future.

"There are other people on the road. There are people with families," she said. "Your driving is a responsibility. Whether you're on your phone or not paying attention on the road, there are families waiting for people to come home and sadly often times they don't."

Parrish said the hope is for the sign to be up at soon as possible.
