Lubbock volunteers encourage others to engage with community

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a national day of service for thousands of volunteers in the nation.

For the Volunteer Center of Lubbock, Stacy Kelley said it chose to give back to the city's public servants.

"After the things that have gone on in the past couple of weeks in Lubbock, we decided to have some gift bags made full of things that can just treat our service men and women in the fire department and the police department," Kelley said.

Kelley said volunteering can benefit not just the ones you are serving, but also yourself.

"It is so important to engage volunteers in the community, so many organizations exist on the backs of volunteers. They don't have enough funding to pay for full time staff, so we all need the volunteers," Kelley said.

Bethany Naranjo, with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock, said this month, it is showcasing why mentoring matters, and says there are nearly 80 kids in Lubbock waiting for a mentor.

"You become that supporter for a child who may need that extra friend, that person to encourage them to do better academically, encourage them to believe in themselves," Naranjo said.

She encourages mentors to spend at least an hour a week with their "little brother or sister." She said this time can have a tremendous impact on a child.

"It makes them so much happier. They believe in themselves, they want to do better," Naranjo said. "Sometimes, they come and they're like, 'I don't know what I want to do,' and after a couple months of being in a mentorship, they're like, 'I want to be a doctor,' or 'I want to be a fashion designer, they really embrace who they want to be."
