LEA COUNTY, New Mexico -

New Mexico State Police are investigating a shooting involving a Lea County Sheriff's Deputy last week.

On Jan. 8, the deputy tried conducting a traffic stop on a white four-door passenger car with a Texas license plate. According to investigators, the car was reported stolen from the Hobbs Police Department. The car pulled into an apartment complex when the deputy temporarily lost sight of it.

The deputy was able to spot the car in the back of the complex. That's when the driver tried to drive off and stuck the deputy's unit head on. The suspect was able to escape after the crash.

According to police, the deputy drew his department issued firearm and fired at least one shot towards the vehicle. The driver sped off, evading deputies. Later deputies found the stolen car at an abandoned apartment complex in Hobbs. The suspect was not found and has not been identified at this time.

The deputy was treated and released on scene for injuries.
