Democrat running for TX-19: Vote out President Trump

LUBBOCK, Texas -

The sole Democrat running for Rep. Jodey Arrington's seat said Friday he's running to help his party vote President Trump out of office in November.

Joining a tour of U.S. Senate candidates vying for the chance to run against Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), Tom Watson said when he learned no one else had filed to challenge Rep. Arrington, he "had to step up."

"I was in the Marine Corps," Watson, an attorney from Abilene, said, "I was in Vietnam, I didn't have heel spurs."

Watson was referring to President Trump, who deferred entry into the Vietnam-era draft due to a medical diagnosis in 1968. The military drafted 300,000 men that year alone.

Watson spent 31 years as an attorney in Brazoria County, south of Houston, then moved to Abilene in 2005 to start a firm with his daughter and son-in-law.

"Now," Watson continued, "we need to make a change at the top, and I want to help get Democrats out to vote in the fall for all of the Democratic ticket -- and especially to rid our country [...] of Donald Trump.

"Trump has to go," Watson emphasized, striking the podium at Lubbock County Democrats' headquarters with his finger. That drew applause from the small assembly.

"That's why I am here."

Since no other Democrat filed to run, Watson is the de facto nominee. He'll face Rep. Jodey Arrington in November.
