Abernathy football coach Darrell Daily announces retirement

Posted: Updated:

Coming off a 12-2 season where he led Abernathy to a District 2-3A Division II Championship, head coach Darrell Daily is calling it quits. He had six stops before getting the Abernathy head coaching job in 2009. He's been a football coach for 33 years.

His record is 105-32 with the Antelopes and says it'll be tough to replace the excitement of Friday nights.

"Not many high schools have this type of fan support. They've been so good and we've been really good playing against big teams and I will miss that," Daily said.

One of the highlights of his tenure was being able to coach his son, quarterback and West Point commit Bryson the past four years.

"It's great when he's as talented as he is. We have a great relationship, we don't take much home. We chew at each other a little bit but I wouldn't trade any of it for the world," Daily said.

Bryson had a lot of opportunities to play at the next level. While it'll be tough for Darrell to not be able to see and coach his son every day, he's excited for his next chapter.

"That's where he wanted to go. We don't make decisions for our kids. That's one thing that we don't do. We've got strong-minded kids who do great things," Daily said.

"It's special. He made me into the player that I am today. All of the success that we had started with him as our coach. Getting the chance to play at the next level is a blessing," Bryson said.

Daily says it's a good time to call it quits from coaching. His weekends will be free to support his son at Army, but is still under contract with Abernathy until June.

"I will still be here, early, and i'll help whoever because I want to make sure these kids are taken care of."

He doesn't have set work plans for retirement, but will prioritize doing something on his own time.
