Lubbock P.D. responds to Level Nightclub murders

Posted: Updated:

It took less than five minutes for Lubbock P.D. to respond to the double murder at Level Nightclub, but months of concern lead up to the shootings.

After a shooting in the parking lot of Level Nightclub on November 29, more patrol officers were assigned to the Depot District area.

"What I have seen in this short time period is unacceptable," Lubbock Police Chief Floyd Mitchell said.

On December 5 and 7, Patrol Officers, Crime Suppression and Texas Anti-Gang Units specifically targeted the Depot. That led to more than 200 traffic stops, 30 felony arrests, 31 misdemeanor arrests, 75 cleared warrants, 45 citations, five confiscated guns and drug seizures.

On December 10, Lubbock P.D. requested assistance in enforcement action from T.A.B.C. Chris Porter said the agency pitched in and conducted regular inspections even before the 10th.

On December 12, Lubbock P.D. met with Derrick Jackson, the owner of Level Nightclub. Jackson brought up some concerns like traffic patterns and L.P.D. shared things they wanted him to address like security inside, in the parking lot and patting people down.

"We were working toward coming to solution," Chief Mitchell said.

Since the shooting on New Year's, Lubbock P.D. has partnered with T.A.B.C. to investigate the club owner.

"At this time he is cooperating with our investigation," Chief Mitchell said.

In order for an establishment to be shut down, T.A.B.C. looks into repeat patterns of behavior that puts the public in danger. These are things like code violations in regards to occupancy, over serving, and under the age party goers. These are all things that have been reported in the last six months.

As for now, the club is still shut down for another few days while the investigations continue. Police haven't issued an arrest or released any information on suspects. If you know anything, call Crimeline 741-1000.
