LUBBOCK -

The Lubbock Police Department will increase its presence downtown and around the Depot District, following the double homicide at Club Level earlier this week.

Chief Floyd Mitchell provided updates during a news conference Friday afternoon. He said this was LPD's first steps January 1:

1:52 a.m. - First 911 call, reporting shots fired received
1:53 a.m. - Officers received information of shooting, responded
1:57 a.m. - First officers arrived on-scene

Chief Mitchell was among those who responded to the scene. He was riding with a patrol officer that night.

Since November 24, Chief Mitchell said the department has responded to multiple calls at Club Level, including four assault calls, one assault with a firearm call, one assault with a firearm resulting in injury call, in addition to the deadly shooting New Year's Day early morning call.

Mitchell said on Dec. 5 and Dec. 7 crime suppression and Texas Anti-Gang officers conducted targeted operations in this part of downtown. Multiple arrests were made, including 30 felony and 30 misdemeanor charges. This operation also resulted in 75 warrants cleared, five weapons seized and some drugs confiscated.

We reported Thursday other business owners in the area point to the club operator as a problem, not the Depot District in general. A petition has been created asking for the club to be shut down. The TABC has issued a seven-day suspension of Club Level's alcohol license.
