Gov. Abbott attends funeral for church shooting victim

Posted: Updated:
FORT WORTH, Texas -

When a gunman entered a Texas church Sunday, Richard White stepped in to stop the violence.

He was killed along with another man at the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, just outside Fort Worth.

White was a member of the church's security team. Thursday family and friends gathered for his funeral. Governor Abbott was even there to offer his condolences.

"I never had the opportunity to meet the man but I leave here today knowing the man and knowing his connection to this community, this congregation, and his commitment to God," Governor Abbot said. "There are people in that congregation today, alive today, because Rich stood in the breach and protected others."

White's family praised his actions, saying he saved many lives during the shooting.
