LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock's first baby of the new decade was born at Covenant Children's early Wednesday morning.

Daxxton Kace Castro was welcomed into the world at 2:21 a.m. He weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 21.5 inches long.

His parents, Jonathan Castro and Krystal Rodriguez, said it was exciting to have their son born on New Year's Day.

"We were just thinking about how like, when the countdown comes in with all the other years you know, it would be counting down his birthday kind of. So we thought it'd be pretty nice for him," Rodriguez said.

Daxxton's due date was Jan. 7, but Rodriguez was induced a week early. Before that, she said she was anxiously awaiting the call from the hospital.

"I kept checking in with them, and they're like, 'No, not yet,' so we're sitting in the living room, and get about like three calls, and I'm like they're not going to call us, we'll just have to wait until tomorrow, but they gave us a call. It was Covenant, they're like, 'Come on, we're ready for you," Rodriguez said.

Daxxton is child number two for Jonathan and Krystal. They have another son, 3-year-old Carlos.

Rodriguez said they are thrilled for Carlos to have a younger brother, and they have been praying a lot for their new son's intelligence.

"I'm just more excited about him having a brother to be around, and just someone that grows and learns with him. Its been fun," she said.

The parents add this was the best way to ring in the new year, and they would not have wanted to be anywhere else.
