A Friona man was killed after his vehicle was hit by a train early Monday morning in Randall County.

It happened near U.S. 60 and FM 168 just after 5:00 a.m. near Umbarger.

DPS reports the driver was traveling south on FM 168, approaching the intersection of U.S. 60. For unknown reasons, he disregarded the stop sign at the intersection, drove across all lanes of U.S. 60, drove into a bar ditch, struck a dirt embankment and then struck the railroad ballast for the first set of tracks and the vehicle began to roll.

The vehicle rolled over the first set of tracks and came to rest upside down on its roof on the second set of tracks. The vehicle was then struck by an eastbound train and came to rest on the tracks 2,000 feet past area of impact.

The driver, Carlos Olvera, 21, of Friona, died at the scene.
