HOCKLEY COUNTY, Texas -

The Hockley County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a phone scam going around the area.

According to the office's Facebook page, deputies received two notifications about the scam Monday, with someone calling and claiming to work for Xcel Energy in an attempt to scam residents out of money.

The number shows up on caller ID as 800-895-4999, which is Xcel's number. However, deputies said the caller is a scammer. The first notice the office received Monday was in an area of the county that was not in Xcel's service area.

If you receive a call from these individuals, deputies warn do not give them information. If you have a question about you service or bill status with Xcel, contact them directly.

This notice is from Xcel Energy's website:

"If you have any doubt about the authenticity of someone claiming to be with Xcel Energy and asking for payment, we recommend that you hang up and check your account status using My Account or our mobile app, or call Xcel Energy Customer Service at 800-895-4999 or our Business Solutions Center at 800-481-4700* (M–F, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.)."
