Adoption rates rise, animal services say to consider factors before gifting pets

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Around the holidays shelter adoptions are up as families gift pets to their loved ones, but before adding a new member to your family it's important to make sure it's a right fit.

"It's going to be with you for a long time, it's going to depend on you, it's going to need you and it's going to need things from you," Sarah Field with 4 Legged Friends of Lubbock said.

Field emphasizes the importance of planning ahead when considering buying a pet for a family member.

"So you have to think about things like doggy daycare, if they're not already spayed and neutered - that's something you need to consider - if they need medical care," she said. "You need to plan ahead for these things."

She said it's a life-changing responsibility many don't consider when adding a dog into the mix of their lifestyles.

"I mean just because you see a certain dog or a certain breed that you're like 'man that's really cute, I would really love that dog.' If you have a busy lifestyle you don't need an Australian Shepherd," Field said. "That dog is very busy and they're going to need a lot."

Deaon Bryant, supervisor for Lubbock Animal Services, said it's also important to give your pet time to adjust to life outside of a shelter.

"They're not going to come into your home already knowing all the rules and knowing where the doors are and knowing what time they can go out and what time they can't. So it's all going to be a process. Just be prepared for the amount of time it's going to take," she said.

While adoptions may be up during this already stressful time, Field stresses talking with your family before adding a new addition.
