Rainy today, cool this weekend

Meteorologist Bobby Johnston said the temperature should only reach the low 50's in the afternoon. Expect rain across much of the area, at times it may not be much more than drizzle. This evening the risk for severe weather is fairly low, but this is when heavier downpours can be expected. Showers will be exiting early Saturday morning clearing out and becoming windy.

Waste services recycling live Christmas trees

The Solid Waste Services Department will offer residents with live Christmas trees Drop-off Recycling at its four permanent Citizen Convenience Stations. Each year the fresh-cut trees are ground into mulch. Residents are asked to remove all decorations, the metal stand, and any plastic before placing natural Christmas trees in the roll-off bins located outside the gates. TxDOT to work on I-27 in 2020

TxDOT's $34.3 million project will make safety improvements to more than 27 miles of the interstate in Lubbock and Hale Counties. The project will install concrete barriers from 82nd Street to Loop 461 in New Deal and will add cable median barriers in certain locations between New Deal and Plainview. Additional improvements include upgrades to lighting, drainage, and concrete. It starts January 6 and is expected to finish in October. 

"The Secure Act" to help retirement savings

President Trump approved a measure that will help you save for retirement. "The Secure Act" was part of the massive federal spending bill. It increases the age for minimum distributions and eliminates the age cap to contribute to a retirement account. The bill also allows part time workers to gain retirement benefits and allows employers to join multi-employer 401K plans and get more tax breaks. 

2 arrested, one sought after Howard Johnson bust

Police records show a housekeeper was cleaning a room after check-out time and found a rifle and drugs all over the room. He called police who detained three people. One of those three was let go, one was arrested on unrelated warrants. Bryan Garcia was arrested and charged with drug felonies. Investigators are looking for a fourth person, only described in police records as Garcia's cousin. 

Michael Martinez reported missing

Lubbock police are asking for your help to find a missing man. Sixty-eight year old Michael Martinez was last seen yesterday on 59th Street East of Indiana. He's about 6'2, 155 pounds, and has gray hair and brown eyes. Police told us Martinez has diminished mental capacities. If you know where he is or see him, call 911.

Red Kettle campaign misses goal by 32%

The Salvation Army ended its biggest fundraiser of the year about 32% under the target goal. The fundraiser ended on Tuesday, coming up about $80,000 short of the target goal. The campaign kicked off on November 21 with an original goal to raise $250,000. The campaign struggled to retain paid workers who bring in 74% of the donations. It's unclear at this time how services will be impacted next year.
