Cool next few days, warmer weekend

Meteorologist Bobby Johnston said today is sunny with a high of 53 degrees. A weak disturbance will bring a few more high clouds tomorrow. The weekend will turn warmer, with 60's both days. We'll likely see more 60's first part of the week.

House to vote on impeachment articles today

It's almost certain President Trump will become the third president in our nation's history to be impeached today. Ahead of the vote in the House today, President Trump sent a scathing six page letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi where he called the impeachment process "an illegal, partisan, attempted coup." Speaker Pelosi called the letter ridiculous and sick. For the articles of impeachment to pass, 216 members of the house need to vote yes. It appears Democrats do have the necessary votes.

New Slaton Mayor elected

Slaton voters elected a new Mayor. With 60 percent of the vote, Lynn Nowlin won the run off. She defeated John Gatica after no one won a majority of votes back in November. Nowling has served as a Slaton City Commissioner since 2005 and Mayor Pro Tem since 2010.

House vote set for U.S.M.C.A. approval

The U.S. Mexico Canada trade deal will go for a full house vote tomorrow. The House Ways and Means Committee approved the landmark replacement for NAFTA yesterday. The committee also approved a resolution calling for changes at the World Trade Organization.

Budget funds gun violence research

For the first time in more than two decades, Congress has approved funding for gun violence research with $25 million of that new budget earmarked for research. For more than two decades, the C.D.C. has avoided firearms research because of its interpretation of the so-called Dickey Amendment, but the sponsor of that amendment reversed his position before he died.

Budget may raise national smoking age

The legal smoking age may be raised to match the legal drinking age. A group of top senators agreed to raise the federal tobacco sales age from 18 to 21. That includes e-cigarettes and other vaping devices. Texas has already raised the tobacco sales age to 21. By attaching it to the budget, top lawmakers are hoping to get the high age across the finish line. President Trump's expected to sign before the deadline.

Look Around Lubbock: Overton Hotel Gingerbread Display

For the 8th consecutive year, the culinary team at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center has complete the annual gingerbread display. Over the years, the holiday project has raised close to $20,000 for the Texas Boys Ranch. Meredith Aldis will be with Executive Chef Doug Noxon throughout the morning with details on this year’s theme of a giant tree house.
