Austin-area high school donates $5,200 to Estacado High School band

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Made up of about 60 kids, The Estacado High School band's numbers pale in comparison to other school bands across the state, but their performances on the field are among the very best.

That is what Vista Ridge High School Band Director Bryan Christian said, who leads a group with about five times as many kids.

He said when the Estacado band performed at Bands of America, everyone was amazed.

"Some of my band parents saw them perform and they were just absolutely inspired by the energy and the commitment and the dedication those kids were giving in the performance," Christian said.

This prompted the Vista Ridge band to start a fundraiser for Estacado to make sure their band has the resources to continue performing with the same kind of spirit.

"We've kind of developed this mutual support within our band, but really the whole band community. It's not about who beats somebody else. It's really cool because you go across the state and the nation, and it's band kids supporting other band kids," Christian said.

The funds raised by this student-driven donation drive: Approximately $5,200.

When Estacado High School Band Director Jacob Faske heard about it, he couldn't wait to tell his group.

"I mean, they were floored. I think some of them were crying when they saw the video. It's just humbling to know that the efforts we put into our kids and the stories they tell on the field comes across to other people," Faske said.

Faske added that money will go towards buying a trailer for the band to more efficiently transport and haul equipment to games.
