Open Door partners with Lubbock Housing Authority to fight chronic homelessness

LUBBOCK, Texas -

For many people with disabilities in homelessness, they need a support system along with housing. This challenge is now met with two organizations in our area teaming up to provide both.

"These are people who have high needs," Executive Director of Open Door Chad Wheeler said. "A lot of people with chronic health issues that need long-term support, not just housing."

Open Door is working with the Lubbock Housing Authority to further the goal of reducing chronic homelessness in Lubbock.

"What makes this project so unique is that it's collaborative," he said. "So two organizations providing very different components of the project."

Wheeler said this program will add an additional 25 units to the Housing Authority. Those homes will be funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"We have people on the waiting list right now that'll be ready for these units. But anybody that enters homelessness, they can be assessed and get on the list as well," Wheeler said.

The Housing Authority's in charge of providing rental assistance, while Open Door is responsible for supportive services.

"From the point that someone is homeless we have case managers that are going to help connect with them and help them apply for these vouchers," he said.

It's the first step in creating a better life for those exiting homelessness. Wheeler expects to add 15 more people to the program by the end of next year.

If Open Door raises $50,000 by the end of this year, donors will match it and the non-profit will receive and additional $50,000.
