NEW YORK -

Avery Benson came up large in Texas Tech's program-first win over a top-ranked team, defeating Louisville here at Madison Square Garden.

Benson had his best game as a Red Raider, with 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Coach Chris Beard recognized the impact he's had in the Red Raiders' win on the national stage.

"This is his third year at Texas Tech and he has an Elite Eight ring, a Final Four ring and a Big 12 Championship ring and that's not by happenstance," Beard said.

"He's a tough guy. He knows his role. He plays his role. He's unselfish. He's tough."

Beard says Benson can do everything asked of him and has earned his playing time.

"He's a good player. He gets it done every day in practice," Beard said.

The Red Raiders won without freshman star Jahmi'us Ramsey, the team's leading scorer. Beard said Ramsey begged to play Tuesday. He's making progress, but Beard said Ramsey won't see playing time until he's fully cleared.
