Texas Tech upsets #1 Louisville at Madison Square Garden
NEW YORK -
Top ranked teams in college basketball haven't had the most luck this year. Many of them upset by lower or non-ranked teams.
Texas Tech followed the trend against #1 Louisville in the Jimmy V Classic with a 70-57 win. The Red Raiders played to their identity, defense. Something that was lacking in their previous three losses.
Avery Benson was the highlights of the first half. The red shirt sophomore led the team with six points, two rebounds and two big blocks that prevented the Cardinals from making it a one point game at half.
The defense continued to excel in the second half. On offense, Davide Moretti struggled to find his three in the first, he made a big one with 12 minutes to go in the game to give the Red Raiders a nine point lead.
After a slight momentum shift with eight minutes to go in the game, Louisville brought the game within four, however Chris Clarke hit a three to prevent the Cardinals from getting too close.
From there, the Red Raiders kept pressing the Louisville offense with the strong defense. Texas Tech shot 39% from the field, Louisville shot 33%. Davide Moretti led the Red Raiders with 18 points.
This is the third time an unranked team upset the top-ranked team this season. This was the first time the Red Raiders defeated the number one team in the country with the 70-57 W at MSG.
