LUBBOCK, Texas -

Police arrested a student at Smylie Wilson Middle School after finding a gun in the student's backpack.

Lubbock ISD administrators say an employee noticed something suspicious and reported the student.

The firearm was found after a searching the student. The district did not report what type of gun it was or if it was loaded at the time.  No threats were made to students or teachers at any time.

Parents were notified about the situation by email and text message. Lubbock ISD has a zero-tolerance policy when dealing with firearms on school property.

The message sent to Smylie Wilson families states the violator faces severe disciplinary action. And it asks parents to talk with their children about the importance of notifying an adult of anything suspicious they notice and the severity of consequences if anyone brings a weapon to campus.
