UPDATE: Man convicted of murder for killing girlfriend, faces life behind bars
LUBBOCK, Texas -
Juan Carlos Gallardo was found guilt of murder today for killing his girlfriend, Yvette Ellis, out of fear that she was going to leave him, prosecutors claim.
Gallardo claimed Ellis took the gun from him and pointed it at her own head when it fired, but he could not explain three other bullet wounds on Ellis's body.
Judge Trey McClendon will sentence Gallardo on Monday. He faces up to life in prison with the possibility for parole.
Trial continues tomorrow for a man accused of executing his girlfriend in front of her kids.
Juan Carlos Gallardo is charged with shooting and killing Yvette Ellis at her home in central Lubbock back in 2017.
Prosecutors claim Gallardo was afraid Ellis was going to leave him, so he killed her. Today the jury heard from forensics experts on the blood at the scene, and saw some clips from Gallardo's police interrogation.
In that recording, Gallardo told investigators Ellis took the gun from him and put it to her own head when it fired. He wasn't able to explain the other three bullet wounds in Ellis's body during that interrogation.
If convicted, Gallardo faces up to life in prison with the possibility for parole.
