Meteorologist Bobby Johnston said it is partly sunny with a few sprinkles possible, but not much in precipitation expected if it even reaches the ground. The high is near 59 degrees with a light southwest wind of 5-15mph.
Study: U.S. life expectancy drops for third year in row
Life expectancy continues to fall for Americans according to a new study released by JAMA Network. It decreased after 2014 by four months to a little more than 78 and a half years. Adults aged 25 to 64 are dying at higher rates due to obesity, alcohol, suicide, and drug overdoses. The study also indicated the decline is greater in people with lower incomes. Lubbock ISD considering arming school faculty
Lubbock ISD is looking into the idea of arming school personnel for student safety. The school district invited parents to share thoughts at a meeting at Estacado High School last night. In the last year, several new preventative safety measures have been implemented including a new standard response protocol, a new app to report threats anonymously, and keeping classroom doors locked at all times. United Way exceeds campaign goal
The Lubbock area United Way had another successful fundraising campaign, raising more than $5.9 million. Over the agency's 73 year history, the tally is more than $188 million. Donations assist people with needs including affordable childcare, crisis situations, literacy, job training, and youth mentoring. For the full story: click here.
Greater efforts needed for reducing global warming
The European Union will miss its targets for reducing planet-warming greenhouse gases by 2030 unless member states make a greater effort than they have so far. The European Environment Agency reports that existing measures put the E.U. on course to cut its emissions by 30% in the next decade compared with 1990 levels. Currently, the 28 nation bloc aims for a reduction of 40% by 2030, and some have called for this target to be raised to 55%.
House Judiciary Committee holds hearings today
The House Judiciary Committee will hold its first impeachment hearing this morning after the release of a 300 page report by the Intelligence Committee outlining evidence against President Trump. It's the result of 17 witness interviews including the 12 conducted during two weeks of public hearings. Members will hear from constitutional scholars today on whether the accusations against the President meet the criteria for high crimes and misdemeanors.
