LUBBOCK, Texas -

A Child Protective Services judge will run to take a higher bench.

The Honorable Kara Darnell on Tuesday announced her candidacy for the 99th District Court. Judge Bill Sowder is retiring from that seat after 15 years. Judge Darnell has served as a child protection judge for six years and says this is a perfect chance for her to step up and lead on a different level.

"The kind of cases I've been doing are the hardest cases filed in Lubbock County in my opinion," Darnell said. "Child abuse and neglect - I see some ugly stuff. And I do handle these cases and I deal with it on a daily basis."

Darnell is the only Republican to file for this race so far. The party primaries are March 3. The last day to register to vote for the primary is Monday, Dec. 9.
