Trial underway for man accused of fatally shooting girlfriend in 2017

LUBBOCK, Texas -

A Lubbock man is on trial accused of murdering his girlfriend in January of 2017.

Juan Carlos Gallardo is charged with shooting and killing Yvette Ellis at her home in central Lubbock. Prosecutors say Gallardo abused Ellis, isolated her from her friends and co-workers, and fought with her. They claim Gallardo feared Ellis was going to leave him and threatened suicide.

Lead prosecutor Jessica Gorman says Gallardo executed Ellis in her own kitchen in front of her children. Gallardo's defense attorney isn't arguing it's a tragic case, but asks the jury to set aside emotions and follow the evidence.

If convicted, Gallardo faces up to life in prison with the possibility for parole.
