Thousands hit stores for Black Friday deals

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Thousands of people hit the stores in search of Black Friday deals.

For many retailers, the sales started Thanksgiving Day.

"We've made it through Halloween, we've celebrated with our families, and now it's time to get those lists out for all of your loved ones, and Black Friday is just that fun, exciting way to kick it off," Ashley Knox, senior marketing manager for South Plains Mall, said.

Black Friday marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season, with many residents arriving early to beat crowds.

"It's kind of like going to Walmart at two in the morning. You don't want to catch the crowd, you want to get there when there's nobody there," Shaun McConnell, a shopper at the mall, said.

The National Retail Federation reports half of shoppers started well before the first "door buster."

"We are in a very low unemployment, we are in a growing economy. It has been slow growth the last few months, but the National Retail Federation is predicting that November and December sales will be up between 3.8 and 4.2 percent over 2018, so folks want to shop, you know, and I think we're seeing that this morning," Knox said.

Over at KK's Corner's Mall, several vendors are also lowering their prices. Owner Becky Taylor encourages shoppers to keep their dollars local this weekend.

"We have 140 different vendors in here that are small entrepreneurs, and so it affects a lot of people and helps a lot of people when you do shop local, our shop, as well as everyone else in Lubbock," Taylor said.

Shopping at small businesses helps support families, Kristi Frazier, with KK's public relations, said.

"The dollars stay inside our community, and especially for stores like ours that support over 250 families, it's important that you keep those dollars local," Frazier said.
