LUBBOCK, Texas – For the first time in the Coach Marlene era, the Lady Raider basketball team moved to 3-0 on the season with a 79-49 victory over Northwestern State at United Supermarkets Arena on Friday night.
How It Happened
Two Lady Raiders tallied double-doubles on Friday night to lead Texas Tech to victory. Senior Brittany Brewer added 23 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double in as many games this season and 20th of her career. Brewer also racked up seven blocks on the night—her third game this season with five or more blocks.
Sophomore Chrislyn Carr posted a career high in assists with 12 to go along with 10 points and six rebounds for her first career double-double. Carr only needed one half to match her previous career high, helping on eight Lady Raider buckets in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Four Lady Raiders recorded multiple steals in the game, as Tech forced a season-high 26 turnovers on defense. Sydney Goodson led all players with four for the game, and also added 20 points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Raiders led, 22-14, after one quarter, thanks to eight points apiece from Brittany Brewer and Sydney Goodson. Tech went on an 11-0 scoring run midway through the frame that would give them the lead for good.
The second quarter was all Texas Tech, as the Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Demons, 26-7, in the period. Six different Tech players scored in the frame, as the Lady Raiders shot 52.9 percent from the field to lead, 48-21, at the half.
Tech never looked back, as they held the Lady Demons at bay in the second half. Brewer had eight of the Lady Raiders' 15 points in the third quarter. As a team, Texas Tech held Northwestern State to 33.3 percent shooting over the game's final 20 minutes.
Texas Tech will hit the road for the first time next week when they travel to San Diego, Calif., for the San Diego Thanksgiving Classic. The Lady Raiders will open play at the tournament against Purdue Fort Wayne.
