LUBBOCK, Texas -

The city of Lubbock and Lubbock Police held a ground-breaking ceremony today to celebrate the start of construction on a new police substation in east Lubbock.

This is the first of three substations that will be built over the next year and a half.

New police chief Floyd Mitchell says creating the substations will help by stationing officers directly in the area they patrol

"This is an important step that actually shows the people in our community that we're getting started and we're moving forward with the community policing philosophy," Police Chief Floyd Mitchell said. "We're going to put our policing forces; our policing services within those communities. This is a great move for the community and its governing body."

Chief Mitchell says he believes decentralizing law enforcement will have a positive effect on the our community as a whole.
