Lubbock Salvation Army not impacted by Chick-Fil-A decision

LUBBOCK, Texas -

In a press release Chick-Fil-A announced donations from "the home of the original chicken sandwich" will no longer go to the Salvation Army or the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Both organizations have faced criticism over their stances on homosexuality and same-sex marriage. Starting next year, the fast-food chain will give to organizations that focus on education, homelessness and food insecurity.

In 2018, the Chick-Fil-A foundation reports donating 115,000 dollars to the Salvation Army to provide gifts for children during the holidays.

"They've made funding decisions and put together strategies that are going to suit them.salvation army understands that, respects that. but locally, from a financial stand point, it won't negatively impact us at all," Major David Worthy said.

Major Worthy leads the Lubbock Salvation Army.  He emphasized that it is a misconception the organization will turn people away because of their sexual orientation or gender.

"Our international mission statement says this: We exist to meet human needs, without discrimination. It's woven into the fabric of who we are as an organization," he said.

The Salvation Army, relies more on donations from every day people.

"The partnership that we share with the public is vital to making Salvation Army services and programs possible for those in need," Major Worthy said. "The Salvation Army is honored to have a number of wonderful local partners who support our work. Scoggin-Dickey is one of those, and the United family. Last year at United Stores, those red kettles raised 88,000 dollars alone."

On Thursday, the Salvation Army will kick off its largest fundraising venture of the year. The red kettle campaign will now feature a cashless way to donate, with a smart phone.

There still is a need for volunteers, you can find a link to sign up here.
