Dunbar Prep students learn life skills through after school programs

Posted: Updated:

Students at Dunbar College Preparatory Academy are learning about finances, team work and accountability.

"I thought that everything was going to be easy," Dunbar sixth grade student Zephania McCoy said.

"Is it?" reporter Meredith Aldis said.

"No," McCoy said.

Four days a week, students have the opportunity to learn about something they may not have the opportunity to during school hours. One of these programs, Financial Literacy through Alliance Credit Union.

"We want these kids to learn the value of a dollar. What it means to get an income and then spend that income," Alliance Credit Union Marketing Vice President Abbie Jones said.

Through a 10 week lesson plan, students come up with a budget and make their own financial choices.

"Everybody wants to grow up and have all the responsibility and the job and the money, but they don't think about the bills, they probably don't know about them," Jones said.

The idea is teaching young students this now, will help the community down the line.

"It's transformative, you teach your kids and they teach their kids," Jones said.

Another program is track. Sports Psychology students from Tech teach the younger generation about working hard as a team. Instructors are hoping this is something the students can look forward to and bring them back to school the next day.

"When they leave we say 'we'll see you tomorrow' and if they're not here we're like 'where were you', it keeps them like accountability," Texas Tech Kinesiology major Eduardo Martinez III said.

For McCoy, this is what he looks forward to all day and he wants to continue running after middle school.

"It will help me get my body right and my health right, so that I can stay in shape and then I could be better in the future," McCoy said.

Whether it's sports or finances, these mentors said they're there to help these kids and ultimately the community.
