Proposal to turn Smylie Wilson Middle School into a magnet campus
Lubbock ISD administrators getting feedback on proposed changes to Smylie Wilson Middle school and how it would affect other campuses.
Superintendent Kathy Rollo hosted a meeting last night at Mackenzie Middle school, one of two campuses that would see an influx of students if the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees approves turning Wilson into a magnet school. She said Mackenzie and Irons middle schools are both situated to be able to take in more students, and they would be receiving additional resources including more teachers and counselors.
Another meeting is set for today at Irons Middle School at 6:30 p.m. Trustees will vote on the plan Thursday morning.
Lubbock ISD introduces 2 new trade programs
The new programs are plumbing and electrical technology.

It's one step toward the journeyman certificate in either trade.
There's a need in both fields here and beyond and the programs will help students transition into a trade or college.

Shootings around the country
Police say a shooting in a Walmart parking lot yesterday in Oklahoma was an isolated incident between people who knew each other. It happened in Duncan, about five hours from here. A man killed a woman and another man in their car before shooting himself. All three died.
Investigators in Fresno, California now say it was 2 men who shot up a backyard party Sunday, killing four and injuring 6 others. Two of the victims were well-known entertainers in Fresno's Hmong community. Investigators say a few people at that party may have been involved in some kind of "disturbance" last week that may have brought this on.
Plan coming to boost production and reduce cost of insulin
The high cost of insulin may end up being a thing of the past for millions of diabetics around the world. The world health organization has announced plans to diversify insulin production on a global scale. Officials with the organization, which is part of the united nations, say diabetes is becoming much more prevalent at a time when the supply of insulin is too low and prices are too high. The agency's two-year pilot project involves evaluating insulin developed by pharmaceutical companies to ensure quality and affordability. If enough manufacturers participate, the program would be expanded to provide insulin to more patients.
