PORTALES, New Mexico -

A Portales man was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder of Erika Zamorano, 32, in 2018.

A Roosevelt County jury found Gerardo Marquez, 36, guilty of second degree murder in September.

In April 2018, Zamorano was found dead inside her home from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Deputy District Attorney Jake Boazman stated at the hearing today that he believed this was a first degree murder case, however, the Grand Jury indicted on a second degree murder. Zamorano’s mother and sister gave victim impact statements to the Court.

The State presented evidence that Marquez is a habitual offender, however Marquez denied the allegations, forcing the Court to hold a habitual offender hearing at a later date. If the prior convictions are proven, Marquez could face an additional four years making his sentence a total of 20 years.

He must serve 85% of his sentence before being considered for parole.
