The city of Lubbock will hold a ceremony honoring the late Congressman Mickey Leland.
Leland was born in Lubbock on Nov. 27, 1944. He died in a plane crash during a humanitarian mission to Ethiopia.
He served in the Texas House of representative before moving on to become a Congressman. He was involved in multiple civil rights and humanitarian causes.
The ceremony will be on Nov. 17th at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Vernon Methodist Church.
It will be follow by the unveiling of a plaque at Booker T. Washington Park.
Mayor Dan Pope will present Mrs. Leland with a special recognition issued by the City of Lubbock.
After the plaque unveiling at BTW park the Lubbock Roots Historical Arts Council will present two portraits of Leland painted by students from Texas Tech University.
