LUBBOCK, Texas -

Students at All Saints Episcopal School and Happy State Bank partnered up to help the Lubbock chapter of the American Red Cross.

Students and faculty raised $1,097.50 in the school’s Halloween costume contest this year. All Saints Middle School student council matched the students donation for a total donation of $2,195.

Happy State Bank agreed to match the school’s donation bringing the total to $4,390.

Student council officers and Happy State Bank officials presented a check to the Red Cross during the school’s Chapel service on Friday morning.

Deborah Finlayson, Executive Director of the American Red Cross's Texas South Plains Chapter and Kristi Gonzales, American Red Cross South Plains Chapter Board President, accepted the check.

Finlayson said that because of All Saints’ donation the Texas South Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross was able to purchase and install 200 smoke alarms in homes last week. She estimates that the school’s donation potentially helped save over 600 lives.

Clay Mercer, Senior Vice President of Happy State Bank and a member of the local American Red Cross Chapter’s Board of Directors, said they were proud to partner with All Saints to present the Red Cross donation.

Mercer said the Bank’s involvement in the project began last year when he was notified as an All Saints parent that the students wanted to donate to the Red Cross.  He said that motivated him to encourage other Happy State Bank officers to join the school’s efforts.
