Red Raider volleyball drops nail-biter at Oklahoma

Posted: Updated:

NORMAN, Okla. – The Texas Tech volleyball team fought tooth and nail, but the Red Raiders could not hang on and dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Oklahoma, Wednesday night at McCasland Field House.

Posting double-digit kills for the 26th time this season, senior Emily Hill led the Red Raiders with 18 kills while freshman Caitlin Dugan followed closely behind with 16. Brooke Kanas and Karrington Jones were the other two Red Raiders to finish in double-digits as they both tallied 10 kills.

Texas Tech opened the match with a come-from-behind, 27-25 win in set one before dropping the second set, 25-18. The Red Raiders fought to win the third set, 25-22 but they couldn't hang on to the momentum and dropped the final two sets 25-16 and 15-11 to the Sooners.

With the loss, Tech falls to 14-12 on the season and 4-8 in Big 12 Conference play.

SET ONE: Texas Tech 27, Oklahoma 25
Kills from Hill and Jones, along with a solo block from Dugan, kept the Red Raiders even with the hosting Sooners, 3-3, early on. However, after Hill notched her second point of the night, Oklahoma went on a 10-3 scoring run that put Tech in a 13-7 hole. A kill from Kanas broke up the Sooners' stride and Tech responded with five unanswered points – highlighted by a pair of kills from Jones – to tie up the set 14-all. The teams swapped points until a 3-0 run for the Sooners gave Oklahoma a narrow two-point lead. Determined to stay in the fight, Tech tied up the set 20-20 and both teams battled for the lead from there on out. After five tied scores, sophomore setter Alex Kirby gave Tech the go-ahead with a dump in the middle. Hill put the final nail in the coffin thanks to a kill in the middle and Tech put away the opening set 27-25.

SET TWO: Oklahoma 25, Texas Tech 18
Tech fell behind 11-5 early in the second set and struggled to make up ground. Back-to-back errors by the Sooners closed the gap, 12-8, and Lindsey Dodson helped behind the service line with the first ace of the night. Another kill from Dugan and an Oklahoma attack error brought the Red Raiders within two points at 15-13, but Tech's momentum continued to lag. A 7-2 run for the Sooners put Tech at a 22-15 disadvantage before a pair of Kanas kills and an Oklahoma attack error broke up the Sooners' rhythm. However, it wasn't enough and Oklahoma claimed set two, 25-18, to even up the match, 1-1.

SET THREE: Texas Tech 25, Oklahoma 22
A trio of quick points helped Tech to an early 3-1 lead at the start of the third set, but the Sooners quickly tied things up. Hill and Dugan used kills to keep Tech in the driver's seat and back-to-back points– a kill from Hill and a huge block from Allison White and Dugan – gave the Red Raiders a two-point edge at 10-8. From there, Tech never relinquished the lead in the third. A kill from Kanas and block by Jones and Hill held the Red Raiders' two-point advantage and three-straight points gave Tech a five-point cushion at 19-14. Oklahoma tried to come back with a 4-2 run, but a Sooner service error and another kill from Hill swung the momentum back towards the Red Raiders. Oklahoma went on to score two more points, but one final kill off the hand of Brooke Kanas gave Tech a 2-1 lead in the match as the Red Raiders clinched the third set, 25-22.

SET FOUR: Oklahoma 25, Texas Tech 16
Four ties kicked off the fourth set as Dugan (2), Kirby and Kanas all buried kills against the Sooners. Oklahoma took the lead on a 5-3 run before Hill interrupted with yet another kill. However, Oklahoma responded with an 8-2 swing and Tech found itself trailing 17-9. A Sooner attack error and Hill's third kill of the set ended the run but Oklahoma went off on another three-point swing to further the damage, 20-11. An Oklahoma service error provided a brief respite and senior defensive specialist Maggie Sagers followed up with an ace to cut the deficit down to seven. Kirby and Jones tried to make up ground with a trio of kills, but Tech could not recover momentum and the match went to 2-2 after the 25-16 loss in the fourth.

SET FIVE: Oklahoma 15, Texas Tech 11
Tech earned the first two points of the do-or-die set thanks to kills from Dugan and Hill, but Oklahoma responded with a pair of kills to even things up, 2-2. The score tied two more times until four consecutive points for the Sooners made Oklahoma the first to reach the halfway mark. After the teams swapped sides, Tech capitalized on a pair of Sooner errors and a kill from Hill to cut Oklahoma's lead down to 9-7. However, the Sooners responded with three points before a Hill kill and Oklahoma error made it a 12-9 set. Trailing 13-9, Dugan powered a kill on the right side and another Sooner attack error allowed Tech to fight back, 13-11. Unfortunately, one more two-point surge for Oklahoma was too much and the Red Raiders dropped the final set, 15-11, in Norman.

The Red Raiders remain on the road and will play at West Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 16, in Morgantown, W. Va. Live stats, as well as a live stream, will be available for the match.
