LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Virginia Murray Sowell Center for Research and Education in Sensory Disabilities at Texas Tech received a $1.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to address a shortage of specialist working with children suffering from visual impairments

That grant will provide scholarships to 30 people from Texas, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming over the next five years.

The scholarships will be given to individuals who earn a masters degree in special education, and receive training to teach students with visual impairments.

Those chosen will be participants in a 30-month program where they will receive specialized training

"The Sowell Center prides itself on delivering a high-quality distance education to scholars around the country," Rona Pogrund, professor of special education, explained. "We are excited to have the opportunity to focus on under served areas and NVI (neurological visual impairment), the most frequent diagnosis of children with visual impairments today,”
