From Student to Teacher: TechTeach graduates now at Slaton ISD

SLATON, Texas -

Celenne Gomez and Sidnee Harrison were student-teachers at Slaton ISD last year through the TechTeach program, which places students looking to become teachers in rural school districts for a full year, in hopes of receiving a full-time job.

Both Gomez and Harrison have completed the process and are now second-grade teachers at Slaton ISD, helping fulfill the program's mission of addressing rural teacher shortages.

Gomez said she has the TechTeach program to thank for giving her this new challenge.

"It's a different experience because now it's my own responsibility. Last year, I had a mentor-teacher, so at the end of the day, it was her results. So I was just there to kind of help guide the students, but now this year, it is all on me and now these numbers are going to show how well of a teacher I am on my own," Gomez said.

Harrison said spending time at the school for a year has made it an easy, smooth transition into becoming a full-time teacher.

"Just being in this class and them preparing us for this point has really helped because some colleges don't let you come in and be in a class for four days a week, so I think getting that real hands-on experience has really helped," Harrison said.

Gomez added this transition is not just about teaching, but it's also about forming relationships with people inside the building and having that support in the process.

"I'm not just here as if I just have coworkers with me. I have a family, and it's been an amazing experience to take from my senior year with Tech Teach, all the way to now in my first year of teaching," Gomez said.
