Lubbock ISD Athletics powered by three former coaches
LUBBOCK, Texas -
The Lubbock ISD Athletics Department is run by Mike Meeks, J.J. Johnson and Jim Garfield. Combined, they have nearly 100 years of athletics experience.
"And if you break down their experiences individually, we're all different," Executive Director of Athletics, Mike Meeks said.
Prior to their switch to administration, Meeks was a football and track coach. Garfield coached football and Johnson was a successful softball coach. The three administrators deal with Lubbock ISD's 237 coaches, plus athletes.
"Experience in coaching, I think is a must to be in this role," Meeks said.
According to Johnson, "The three of us, have all done different things where our strengths and weaknesses help each other."
"The experience that I've gained throughout my years and kind of nurtured and helped grow, especially young coaches on thing they're going to face throughout their career and then being a sounding board for the older coaches where we can throw ideas off each other," Garfield added.
They all said the growth of coaches and players is their favorite part of the job.
"We really really enjoy watching our kids perform and play and chasing them into playoffs," Meeks said.
"Going to all the games, all the playoffs. Friday night lights, Tuesday night volleyball, basketball, just going and watching the coaches coach and the kids compete," Johnson said.
Occasionally, you might catch the three on the sidelines just as into the action as the players or coaches.
"As a coach you want that adrenaline rush and on Thursday nights, Friday nights, tennis matches, swim meets, it's the competition it's the watching our coaches coach the kids and the kids and seeing the kids being successful," Garfield stressed.
One of the goals of the athletics department is to always have someone at a game and to build junior high athletes to make successful high school teams.
