LUBBOCK, Texas -

Chris Beard has become a man of the people, especially Texas Tech students. To get the student section excited about the upcoming season, he brought his fireside chat live to the Student Union Building.

Students gathered to watch Beard host his weekly show. Many of the students said they're fans of TTU basketball and its head coach.

"He's really down to earth. I know he's a humble guy," Tech senior, John Tedore said. "I've heard some of his interviews coming from Junior college. He has a chip on his shoulder."

Texas Tech Junior, Paige Greene added, "After last season he could've let it get to his head. I've seen it happen before, but he knows to stay humble and that everybody is beatable and anything can happen."

Chris Beard emphasized the importance of the student section's role at the USA.

"I love the way that Coach Beard brings the students on to the court after all the games, it just makes us feel really included and that we're important to the program," Greene said.

Texas Tech's match up against Kentucky is one of the most anticipated. If students go to every other non-conference home game ahead of Kentucky, they will get tickets to Kentucky.

The Red Raiders are 50-5 at home under Chris Beard. After a trip to the final Monday of the season last year, fans said they're expecting another exciting season.

"Hopefully we'll be undefeated at home. You never know, getting into the tournament this year and hopefully go all the way," Tedore said.

"I'd love to get back to the natty and hopefully with the whole thing," Greene said. "I feel like we have a great chance to make the tournament this year."

Senior Justin Moore was confident when he said, "Of course we're going number one in the Big 12. I'm not even worried about it. Championship, not even worried about it. You can quote me on that."

Tech opens the season Tuesday, November 5th against Eastern Illinois. There's a new look for this team with eight new players on the roster.
