Monday at the 2019 International Association of Chiefs of Police, Officer Thomas Thompson was called up to stage by President Trump. Officer Thompson is a finalist for the "officer of the year".

President Trump recognized Thompson for his response to an armed robbery in Lubbock.

"Policing in this country is a pretty polarizing topic," Officer Thompson told FOX34 Monday. "So there's people on both sides, but to know that the President of the United States is willing to speak up for us and show up to conferences and shake an officer's hand and say kind things to him and be gracious and supportive, for me personally that tells me everything I need to know. That we do have support and it comes all the way from the top."

A former youth pastor, Officer Thompson joined the Lubbock Police Department in early 2013. He is currently assigned to patrol and also serves as a Field Training Officer, Crime Scene Officer, Firearms Instructor and is a certified Mental Health Peace Officer.

Officer Thompson is part of the Hostage Negotiator Team and works closely with the department’s Crisis Intervention Team. He has been awarded two Life Saving Awards and was the first recipient of the Chief’s Commendation Award. Officer Thompson has been married to his wife, Celeste, for 11 years and they have a six-year-old daughter.
