FOX34 Football Friday
Each week we're at a different high school preparing for the week's football game. This morning we're at Monterey High School. The Plainsmen, led by Coach Wayne Hutchinson are 2-5 going into the game tonight against Palo Duro at 7:30 p.m. Meredith Aldis will have updates through the morning with the Plainsmen.
Sunny and cold
Meteorologist Bobby Johnston said grab your jacket on your way out the door. The cloud cover will clear later this morning and will be sunny for most of the day. Temperatures will stay chilly with the high near 53. For the Friday football games, the temperatures should be in the 40's by halftime and likely 30's by the end of the games.
National prescription take back day tomorrow
It's an initiative started by the D.E.A. to provide a safe and convenient way to dispose of your medicine which has taken on new urgency with the growing number of opioid related deaths and misuse of prescription medicine. Over the counter medication and needles are not accepted. Don't get rid of medication by simply throwing it in the trash and keep away from kids. 2020 census good for Lubbock County
County Judge Curtis Parrish said filling out next year's census will help Lubbock County continue running. The official population count also records various details about who lives in our area. It' also used to determine how many seats each state receives in the house and how roads, schools, emergency response services and even hospitals are funded. You'll start receiving these surveys April 1.
Funeral today for Rep. Elijah Cummings
Congressman and Civic Rights Champion Elijah Cummings is set to receive a final farewell in Baltimore today. Former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are among the scheduled speakers for the funeral at New Psalmist Baptist Church. Congressman Cummings died October 17 at age 68 of complications from longstanding health problems. Yesterday, Cummings became the first African American lawmaker to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol.
Lubbock I.S.D. reassigns Chief Financial Officer
Jeff Baum will no longer manage the district's money. At their board meeting, trustees announced he'll over see special projects at the discretion of Superintendent Kathy Rollo. Shortly after that board meeting, Baum announced he'll step down from the district entirely after this school year. The district emphasizes the re-assignment had nothing to do with his job as C.F.O. or his fiduciary responsibilities. For the full story: click here.
Mitchell to step down from Health Sciences Center
Chancellor will be Tedd Mitchell's sole job at Texas Tech in November. Today marks one year since he took over for Former Chancellor Robert Duncan. In both roles, he guided the system through the legislative session and secured both a dental school and the vet school. Lori Rice Spearman will serve as the Interim H.S.C. President while the regents look for a new full time leader.
