Lubbock Meals on Wheels delivers emergency meals

LUBBOCK, Texas -

More than 800 emergency meals were delivered Thursday to the home-bound, elderly and disabled in our area.

It's enough for two meals in case Lubbock Meals on Wheels has to cancel deliveries due to an emergency, like ice or snow. All of the food contained in the emergency boxes is shelf-stable through October, 2020.

The non-profit packaged more than 1,500 boxes to go out to all of its recipients in the case of inclimate weather.

"Really we have to watch out for our volunteers safety, because we've got 61 people that are out there delivering the meals everyday," Associate Director Mary Gerlach said. "So, basically we try to go off of Lubbock ISD and if they close the schools then we generally can't deliver."

A grant given by the Lubbock Lion's Club helps fund these meals. The boxes include non-perishable, shelf-stable food items like soup, crackers, applesauce, oatmeal and milk.
